Why I Fight for Air
I didn't know about the Fight for Air Climb six months prior to starting my
internship at the American Lung Association in California. I knew that helping
the American Lung Association in California was a cause worthy of my time and
energy. What I also learned in the process is how dedicated, warm and kind
these staff members are.
I have witnessed staff console lung disease patients and their families.
They do not do it because they have to. They do it to brighten someone's
day.
I have witnessed staff, volunteers, and interns work extended hours to make
their programs successful.
I have also witnessed the need to make lung health a pressing issue in
societal discussion. Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate by far for both
men and women. Asthma is the #1 childhood chronic disease. COPD is the 4th
leading cause of death in the United States, yet most people don't even know
they have it. I hadn't even heard of it before my internship.
No one should struggle to breathe. That is why I am participating in the
Fight For Air Climb.
